in compound phil seemed to be a minor charachter until he became a larger part in the last chapter when he helped to fight elis escape. i also think phil wanted them to stay in the compound so he could run dads company tk and make a lot of money.
in the book compound i also found that many times eli flashes back to major events in his lifetime that help to let the character know more for the personality of the characters in the flashback i think it was great literary tool that brought out the true rex yanakis gradulally trough the story.
